Monday Menus – The Aldi Challange week 1

So I decided since I am going to have to learn fast how to set Menu plans and stick to them with our pending move to Cape York, I thought now was as good of a time as any to start Menu planning and foods budgeting. (Yes you just read right, I DO NOT already do this!)

With that idea in place I thought I would set up a little Challenge for myself (and anyone willing to come along for the ride.)

Over the next few months I will be setting myself a task to set up a Menu plan, a food budget and a Store to shop at. I will share our Menu’s, Recipes and yes even our Food Budget with you all.

I am going to do the hard work for you, I will find and share the recipes, set the Menu and try and give you real tips on how to make your dollar go further in each store.

When we move to Cape York I can only buy from the local IGA,  Coles and Woolworth Online and have it delivered either weekly or fortnightly. Delivery Costs can be up to $100 Dollars per order for a family our size so I need to be organized, have a well stocked pantry and since the Local IGA has higher than normal prices on a lot of items I need to be wise about what I can and can’t buy from them in regards to our Budget.

SO I decided to start with Aldi because Aldi doesn’t deliver and I would like to see what items I can stock up on in Aldi that are not available or are more expensive in the other stores so we can ship them with us when we move.

SO if you are game I will share every Monday my Menu and weekly Budget. Now I am buying food for a family of 7, 3 Adults(our 17 year old eats Adult portions) 2 Teens 13 & 14 (both are small portion size eaters) and 2 under 10 years old. So you can adjust your meat/Veggie and fruit portions and other volumes or you can just cook the same and have left over freezer options if your family is smaller, or just add more if  your family is larger.

Just a Note: Our family is also pretty much Grain free, we have one child who because of his disability is Gluten sensitive, 2 others need to avoid artificial colourings and process foods, we are NOT Health freaks but we are trying to make changes to make us all healthier so we are trying to eat very little highly processed foods.

I am looking at ways to make Healthy = Cheaper……so hopefully I can share some of those ideas too.

So come join me every Monday as I share my Menu and though out the weeks as I share some things I learn. If you have any tips PLEASE feel free to share them on the Facebook page or here in the comments.

  1. When we lived in the North we had to shop in the only store in the community – and it was stocked weekly by plane with sub standard goods – if there is any way you can grow your own greens etc up there I suggest you plan for that. We couldn’t get vegetables barring frozen ones for several years and I had to be creative in our meals. You have a challenge ahead but it will be fun. I am with you all the way!

    • I am sure we will face some similar challanges only for us it will be the Wet season(Summer) that causes us to get cut off. The only store where we are moving is pretty well stocked they tell me, but some items are awfully expensive. I am hoping I can at least grow herbs, an maybe some Tomatoes and lettuce……. that do not travel well. We would love to take our Chooks with us as we eat alot of Eggs, but I think that will prove to be impossible, hopefully I can source them locally
